History of the French Bulldog

There are many speculations about the origin of the French Bulldogs. The most popular opinion is that the breed originated from British Bulldogs Miniature and they were taken to France by artisans during the Industrial Revolution and during the economic crisis in England. However, an Indian dog was found that lived in ancient Peru, between 1100-1400 b.c.. It was found during excavations of skeletons and mummified dogs and was called Chincha Bulldog.

The history of the origin of the French Bulldog goes back to two countries, England, France and the America continent.

In England the English bulldog was very different from today, it was a strong, tall, athletic dog, with long legs and able to be used in combat. Many breeders began to change the race to a more stocky dog with exaggerated features and were crossed with other terriers, resulting in races for fights. Other breeders have developed smaller dogs weighing between 12-25 kg, with ears shaped like a rose, round forehead and short jaw, with a touch of liveliness terrier.

However they were taken to France, where they were crossed with terriers with "bat ears". These dogs were brought by workers because it was easily to contraband them aboard the ships and also because those ships had many rats, and these dogs were trained to hunt rats. Years later, became the favorite dog of the Parisians, as butchers, traders, owners of coffee and fabric and also the prostitutes of Paris, "Les Belles de Nuit".

The famous artist Henri Toulouse Lautrec portrayed in several works Bouboule a Frenchie owned by Madame Palmyre, the proprietress of a well known restaurant "La Souris".

Most Brits would not hear these dogs getting the French charge of creating the race until the 19th century. French made more uniform breed, with a compact body, straight legs, but without the lower jaw tip of english bulldog. Some continued with the "bat ears" while others with the "ears rose-shaped".
